Gemstone: Tsavorite or Tsavolite (Emerald Green Garnet)

There are many different versions of Roman earrings, but in our opinion, the version presented here shows the very special charm of this remarkable epoch of jewelry.

Nothing about these earrings is perfect in the modern sense: the balls are not absolutely round or flat, the central cone-shaped ornaments are all differently pointed, the cord wires attached there do not exactly follow the equator, the double-row beaded wire above and below the cone tips is partly light pressed in and therefore quite crooked and also the typical Roman braid wire around the upper decorative disc does not really sit exactly everywhere. But it is precisely these small inaccuracies and this touching patina that make up the incomparable charm of these extraordinarily beautiful Roman earrings from our point of view.

The upper disc is adorned with an emerald green tsavorite (or “tsavolite”), a rare gemstone from the garnet group, set in the centre. Garnets as gemstone jewelery had a special meaning in the Roman Empire: In ancient Greek and Roman mythology, the underworld god Hades gave the virgin named Kore or Persephone and daughter of Demeter, the goddess of the fertility of the earth, grain and seeds, who had been stolen from him. pomegranate seeds as a meal before returning from the underworld. Since then, the similar-looking (red) garnets in Roman jewelery have been considered gifts for lovers who are forced to live apart.
