Ironically, it was precisely the many exciting customer orders in recent months that kept us from launching the products we had planned for a long time for our online shop to finally tackle. But now it worked: Some wonderful unique pieces or replicas of medieval rings were created.
For the “initial equipment” of our shop we were able to choose five wonderful and true-to-original mugged cabochons - all of them harmonize wonderfully with silver from our point of view. So in a first litter, a total of five unique silver rings saw the light of day - each with those typical of the High Middle Ages arcade versions.
We were particularly interested in these beautiful gemstone settings – this time in their open form at the bottom. All five gemstones are more or less translucent, so additional light from below is particularly important. All “arcade arches” were finally set with authentic pearl wire and the decorative small capitals supplemented.
To create a harmonious transition from the setting to the underlying ring rail, a so-called “gusset” was added on both sides. This corresponds exactly to the comparable historical models and further enhances the otherwise rather plain ring rails.
All rings were provided with hand-engraved Latin inscriptions on the ring band - this is also a detail typical of comparable originals from the Middle Ages. At that time, it was mostly religious inscriptions, magical symbols and abbreviations or secret personal messages that were often only revealed to the educated medieval owners of the rings.
Our engravings all pick up on a medieval font that marks the transition from Roman to medieval script.
As a highlight in terms of an authentic charisma, all of our rings have been particularly elaborate patinated. For this purpose, the rings, including the inscriptions, were blackened and provided with strong signs of wear, which are also present on the antique originals. With such a clear approximation to the medieval models, the atelier and silver content stamps on the inside of the ring band should of course not be missing in order to clearly identify the ring as a modern replica.
From our point of view, we have managed to reproduce the incomparable flair and the unique charisma of the medieval originals in our unique pieces in a reasonably convincing way. In any case, we put all our love and passion for historical goldsmith work into our first initial shop equipment. 😉
For hopefully appropriate presentation, we then have the rings on an original Roman hypocaust stone arranged:
